As I move about the City of Salem I can't help but notice the ever increasing number of MR/DD children and young adults in the company of family members. Today, I seldom venture into a department store or restaurant without encountering a MD/DD of some type and they are often quite disruptive.
Just as tonight when visiting a local sporting good store when a thirty something father (wearing a newer jacket promoting a local California athletic organization) who was struggling to control his MD/DD seven year old son. The son who chose to physically struggle over everything he saw and wanted to examine, which were many. Golly, those scenes sure make shopping fun for everybody!
Then a few minutes later I visited a fast food establishment, only to find a twenty something male (who was with his mother and younger sister) that kept breaking into a unique dance routine of sorts where he jumped about while jerking his head and neck into some rather extreme contortions. He looked as someone who kept being stung by a bee on his ear and again his bizarre actions would have frightened a young child had any been present at the time.
Ah yes, our Oregon Health Plan at work again.
It seems that Oregon has become a magnet for families (working or unemployed) with MR/DD children as here they have available the financial and personal help needed with their keeping their MR/DD family member at home. Those children who otherwise would require being institutionalizing due to their need for almost constant 24/7 care.
As in this case that I am familiar with, where the young family has moved here so they can gain the help needed to keep their Severely Disabled Child at home, as such support is was not available in their home State.
So here we have a State employee who is pulling down a sizeable income (with benefits), who enjoys one of the better homes, in one of the better neighborhoods and now he and his wife can both work pulling down big bucks as we Oregon Sheeple are picking up the in-Home Support tab for their severely brain damaged daughter.
Did I forget to mention the usually empty, big Yellow 18 passenger bus and driver, that we taxpayers send twice each weekday to transport their child to School from their Day Care and back? Ooop's, did I forget to mention the Nurse we taxpayers provide to help their child once they arrive at public school?
Caring and compassion are one thing, but this is insane as we Oregon Taxpayers can't afford to provide Trump like lifestyles for everyone who wants to have things their way.
