He was No Hero!
Mountain climber Kelly James who was found dead yesterday on Mt. Hood was No Hero, so lets not get started on that tired routine.
He was a selfish, egotistical ass who placed his desire to Challenge the Unknown and possible Death, higher than his devotion and commitment to his family.
Totally irresponsible acts by all.
My hope is some high ranking public employee doesn't hold a news conference to tell us all that Kelly James made No Mistakes, only some bad decisions! In other words, he faced some Issues but had no Problems!
So who among the searchers is scoring Big Over-Time during all these attempted rescues?

Actually, not entirely correct.
While I agree with many of your points, it must be noted that the Cooper Spur route (which is generally regarded as a good preparation for more arduous climbs) is strictly a winter climb due to substrate instability during the summer months.
I'm going to speculate that they summited Hood, because in general, people run into trouble on the way back down. There's this adrenaline rush at hitting the summit, and many folks tend to forget that at the top, you're only halfway there. Well, that and a relatively minor bit of O2 deprivation, which tends to enhance the rush and aggravate the stupidity. Too many consider summiting to be the goal, when in fact the goal is to get there and back. It becomes easy to forget that last part.
If anything, I think you need to put more care into the descent than you employed on the ascent, and this is where a lot of folks really tend to screw up.
Should they have blown $5 and rented a locator beacon? Hell, yes. If they'd been around back when I was climbing, you can bet I'd have had one. It's much smarter to be over-prepared than to be under-prepared, in my view.
